Ok, so I am new to this sub so please be kind.
So I have been thinking about getting a little kitten to raise for a while now and would like some advice.
Disclaimer: I fully understand that a pet is a big responsibility and at all times the kittens welfare will come first.
Whether I choose to rescue or buy is not yet fully decided, but I have some questions regarding whether my life style is suitable for a small kitten as well as costings etc.
I work 37.5 hours a week - Mon to Fri - 8:30 to 5 - with one day at week a home (Sometimes two) I live in a 2 bedroom flat with my father who works from home and is in all week generally 65% of the time. I have a cat flap that has been here since I moved in and is currently covered in tape but cant be restored to full working order, I live in a quite neighbourhood (Sub-urban) where there are other cats.
I am normally around after work for a hour or so before I go out and do other things, gym etc. On a average week will be from 5 till 6 then 8:30/9 to then the following day, I leave work around 8 and then return at 5. This is when it will depend if my dad is at home or working away. Again normally about 65%
Weekends I am normally around the flat or visiting my girlfriends, every weekend is different. So with that bit out the way is this a suitable lifestyle for a small kitten, baring in mind I can work from home more when its young.
My second question would be, what sort of costings am I looking at. Can I take out monthly insurance for my animal and cover vet bills like that, with a small excess in case of the worst? What type of costings am I looking at for food, toys, bowls, litter etc.
Another big question would be how much cleaning will be involved, I understand at first it may be tricky as the animal is young, but going forward how many times a day / week shall I change litter - is there a cleaner / quicker alternative?
I want to make sure I have all bases covered and please chip in if you feel I have missed something, I do not want to cause distress to the animal so hence why I am doing this first. Depending on the outcome of this post, I may also consult a vet / breeder.
Many thanks in advance!
