How do I get my older cat to stop antagonizing the kitten, in an unusual circumstance?

Hey guys, I’ve seen a lot of posts suggesting ideas on how to get an older kitty to accept the young one. Almost all posts I’ve seen have said to make sure to keep the cats separated because of how territorial older cats can be to kittens. However, my situation is a little more nuanced.

My older cat is a bit over a year old and has not had a solid home for a couple months. Actually, this is a cat that I only recently took under my wing because of family who could no longer take care of her.

My kitten had been fostered by close friends who have older cats until I finally got my own place, out of my parents’ dog-inhabited house.

Presently, I have just moved into a new apartment that is as fresh and unknown for me as it is for them.

I’ve said all that to say this: my older cat growls and hisses at the kitten whenever it gets too close. Due to these cats both being brand new to each other and the apartment itself, it doesn’t make sense that the older one would be territorial.

In any case, I would like to do the right thing and separate them, but I am afraid this is not possible because of this new apartment and my desire to keep the cats from loudly meowing and destroying carpet due to being trapped and wanting to get out. I am not really sure what to do and feel that maybe I should just make sure they don’t physically fight, hoping that things will work out eventually? The older cat has not eaten since coming to the new apartment so I am a bit worried for her stress levels. The kitten seems to not care at all and is enjoying the new pad!

Any and all tips would be greatly appreciated!

(Sorry for the wall of text. I just love my kitties and want them to be happy.)
