I have a male cat who is about 10 yrs old. Last fall, we transitioned my son from a crib to a toddler bed and then (stupidly) went away for a weekend. We came back from the trip with a lot of cat poop and pee on the new bed and bed sheets (at the time, we had two cats - the male and a female who has since passed away - and we deemed the incident as "marking territory" battle between the two of them).
So it's been about a year now. We've cleaned those sheets so many times and now have a second bed in the room. Last night, the male cat tried to pee on the bed again (this was the new bed, but the old sheets). We think there is something in the sheets that he can smells and he needs to keep marking. But he only does this when we are all in the room putting my son to bed, not when he's alone in the house or when I am working from home.
Is there something we can do to the bed sheets to remove whatever remaining scent that is prompting the cat to try to pee on it? Or should we just throw those sheets out and replace them with brand new ones (and hoping the temptation to pee on the bed stops)? Should I be cleaning/considering anything else?
Thanks in advance.
