I chose well

I've got a cat, Sam, who is now six years old that I raised from 2 weeks (she and her sister were abandoned; Mum has her sister).

She's always been a people cat, the kind who seems to think they're actually human. She's been around many cats and kittens in her life due to my rescue work, but never really seemed overtly attached to any even though she's been friendly. She hasn't really snuggled with them or engaged in social behaviour like grooming or playing. Truth be told, she's kind of solitary.

She'd been an only cat since I found out I was pregnant in 2017 and housed all but her because I'm particularly attached to her. That said, I've been in and out of hospital since my son was born and I didn't like her being on her own so much. I trialled a kitten but he seemed to annoy her more than anything.

Well, in July I adopted a 4-year-old male named Jasper. After a week of hissing and terrifying him, she let him in.

They've been getting steadily closer, and in the past few weeks I've walked in on them curled up asleep together several times. She plays with him, too, chasing each other or batting a ball around together, etc.

Just now she was sleeping next to me on my bed and he came up to her and licked her head. This instigated a prolonged session of mutual grooming.

I chose Jasper because the shelter said he was shy and reserved. Well, he's slotted right in! He even gets along with my son (20 months) and is very patient with him. He loves snuggling up to me, too

The point of all this is that it pays to go for the unpopular cat sometimes lol Jasper had been in that shelter for a while because nobody wanted a shy older cat and they went for the young and cute ones instead.

Their loss.
