Interested in getting a cat, but we own 3 dogs?

So I live with my family. We currently have 3 dogs! They’re all small (Pomeranians / shih tsu). Two are seniors, (about 10-12 years) and one is a young pupper around the age of 1 and a half.

I’ve always wanted a cat for the longest time! Considering my life style I’ve always felt cats would be the best suited for me (i work as a stay at home freelance artist, constantly in my room) The other family members in my house are fine with the idea of a cat being introduced to the family but I’m just concerned about my dogs.

We’ve watched a friends’ cat In the past, and he got along fine with my dogs but that was many many years ago when the seniors dogs were much younger. I’m just concerned for the safety of the cat and my dogs. Especially the younger dog who hasn’t been introduced to a cat. Could I possibly train them to get used to eachother? Would a younger, or an adult cat be a better option?

I live in a two story house, my dogs always stay downstairs / there’s a gate to prevent them from going up. Should I keep their areas separate? I.e cat food/water and litter box upstairs, while the dog’s are downstairs etc.

All advice, feedback, and past experience are appreciated!
