IVDD in a pug

Back in April, my pug (6.5 years old) had a bout with IVDD that a couple weeks of rest and meds seemed to fix. We took some steps to reduce the risk of it happening again (much less jumping, less running).

About a month ago it happened again out of nowhere. We tried the same thing but it didn’t work as well and an MRI was recommended.

That MRI was 13 days ago and their thought was a very mild inflammation (a 2 or 3 on a 1-10 scale) and they wanted to do medical management for him as opposed to surgery. He’s been on pain meds (gabbapentin), crate-rest for all but going to the bathroom, a steroid (prednisone), and a daily anxiety med (starts with a T; name slips me.)

Good signs: - He’s been eating (I’m actually giving him food bite-by-bite because he’s got such an appetite) - He’s been drinking very well.
- He’s going to the bathroom and everything looks good there, both in frequency and content.
- No yelling out in pain, seems content with a tail that wags when I give him a treat, pet him, etc.

However, he’s still hunched and still limping when he does walk for more than about 10 seconds. He hasn’t taken a single stair or jump in over two weeks now and is laying down about 22 hours a day (the other two being sitting in his cage, going to the bathroom (10-15 minutes per day, or going 5/6 steps out of his cage with my guidance to get water.)

His follow-up is still a few days away, but I’m nervous and anxious. I keep seeing that IVDD surgery is about 80% successful. Does the other 20% mean what I think it means (which I can not take), or are things like “still in some pain” part of that 20%?

Additionally, I’m looking for any stories or wisdom or anything else. I’m terribly nervous. He’s my baby.
