keeping your pet(s) healthy

if you plan on buying and loving any animal, do your research. for example, guinea pigs need their butt cleaned with a q-tip and mineral oil right around when you change the bedding. gross stuff gets caked inside and if it builds up enough, it will block poop from getting out.

my friend’s guinea pig was healthy for a while without these routine cleanings, but eventually his butt became inflamed and infected. it stayed this way for a long time and i went with her to put him to sleep.

i don’t blame my friend for anything that happened, he was old and sick and ready to be put out of his misery. so don’t think that this post is specifically about her or something of the sort.

cleaning a guinea pig’s butt is not fun. it smells, you get oily, your pig squirms and hates it, but it’s necessary.

be aware of the illnesses your pets can get. does your vet office provide service for little animals and large animals? if you have smaller or larger animals (horses, cows, birds, guinea pigs, etc) then you need to be aware of where you can get your furry (or feathery) friend treated.

notices changes in your animals too. does she look different than normal or sick, is she lethargic, is she not walking normally, and others. do whatever you can to help your pet have to suffer for as little time as possible. be a responsible pet owner. they rely on you.
