This is a repost from a post I made on r/PetAdvice. I thought this may get more exposure since this is a more active subreddit.
We have four cats. Two of them are mostly in my parents room and the other two roam around the house. The later are a brother and sister duo named Malachi and Jubilee. Both of them are 9 years old and are pretty big cats. They seem to be both domestic shorthairs (we got them both from an animal shelter 6 years ago) and for reference Jubilee is 16 lbs and Malachi was 15 lbs.
In July, we started noticing that he was looking more skinny. Sure enough, we started weighing him and realized he was losing weight. I think he was 11 lbs or 10 lbs by that time. His weight loss has been a gradual process over the past two months. Last time I checked, which was half a week ago, he was 8 lbs. He's practically starving himself. It mostly stagnated, but he still lost half of his normal weight.
We have given him new dry food and even try to have him eat wet cat food. He barely attacked the wet cat food like he used to.
My dad had him checked out by a vet a month ago. He doesn't have any problems with his gums and they ran a test to see if he had worms. Nothing. He's still fucking losing weight and still barely eating!
I also have to point something out. Both Malachi and Jubilee share a cat box. For the worms test, my dad had to get a
stool sample. The thing is I have no fucking clue how he knew the stool he got was Malachi's. It could've been Jubilee's for all we know!
I also want to point out that him and his sister both share a food bowl.
Now here are some of the theories we had/have:
- Depression: Malachi got very close to my brother's girlfriend who was living with us for the past 3 years. Since June, she's been gradually moving out to a new apartment. Some of us think that because she started leaving, he start getting depressed and refuses to eat as a result.
- He's having teeth issues: we also noticed that when he does eat kibble, sometimes the food quickly falls out of his mouth. The only issue is neither the vet nor us have found any issues with his mouth.
- His sister is bullying him: I have personally seen Jubilee try to swat him away from his food. The only thing is I haven't seen her do it that much recently.
We have been telling my dad that he needs to have him checked out again. No action. Unfortunately he's the kind of person that won't do it unless he's completely convinced that it has to be done and so far, he's not. He has been very busy with work, I get it, but he needs to stop being so fucking stubborn. It's really fucking pissing me off. You know what's making my blood boil even more?! My dad is now convinced that Malachi is just being picky and doesn't like the food he bought for him. What, so you won't get him checked out by a second vet but you're damn near close to buying a different cat food from a fucking pet store? How the fuck does that make sense? He was never this picky with his food before, WHY NOW!?
Also, I have my doubts that the vet he took Malachi to half-assed his job. I really want him to be checked by someone else.
I'm sorry for the rant.
Does anyone have any advice to help with my cat?
