I have a very non-aggressive male otterhound/giant schnauzer mix that has lived with me for over five years. He is currently seven years old or in the neighboorhood. He was a rescue so the exact age is unknown. He is also in the range of 50 lbs - 60 lbs. Very laid back and slowing down as older dogs do.
I was given the opportunity to adopt a female 2-year-old Boxer. She stands about the same height as the male dog does, but is much more fit and chiseled compared to him. Her energy levels are much, much higher than my older dogs.
They were/are getting along just fine, except for when I spend time on my computer. My older dog likes to lay under my desk at my feet. This makes the boxer very upset. She starts to growl and eventually will attack him, biting him on the ears and neck (no broken skin or bleeding) until he gets out from under the desk. After she is done with her attack, she will spend 5-15 minutes licking him on the face and ears. She will also get aggressive if I allow them to follow me into the bathroom, as my older dog likes to get in the tub waiting for me to turn the spicket on to let him lick freshwater (I know it's weird.) She will stand outside of the tub and growl at him. While this occurs the male just keeps his head down and tries to avoid her, she eventually will corner him, everything about his reaction is non-hostile.
She just seems very protective of me and possessive, I've had to break up a fight or two in the three days she's been with me. Does anyone have advice about what I can do to prevent these fights? Or is this just part of her joining the pack? I've tried to yell and be the "pack leader" when this is happening but she gets tunnel vision.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping that she is just trying to assert her dominance and will relax after some time goes by, but I really am just concerned I'm shell-shocking my seven-year-old dog.
They both are fixed.
Edit: Spacing.
