Okay, so I am not a first-time hamster owner. However, I have just now adopted a hamster for the first time since I moved from Alaska - and it has been a couple years since I had a hamster.
I adopted this sweet lil guy (I only adopt pets I feel a connection of sorts with) yesterday. I made sure to let him explore my room in his ball while I put his cage together. Last night, he was pretty active and rather receptive to me giving him treats. A couple minutes ago (while typing this, actually), I even managed to open the cage door and give him some treats from my fingers.
But.. he makes a sort of screeching sound? I'm guessing he only does it when upset? I've had hamsters, but none of them seemed to make loud noises.. is this a common theme? And if it is, how do I identify the sounds?
