Hi everyone, first time posting on this subreddit. Little background: I do not currently own any pets yet, but I had them my whole life growing up. Cats, dogs, ect. The last four years for various reasons I haven't been able to have one.
My SO and I moved in together last year and I could finally have one. Problem is he has allergies. Not super severe, but not great, doesn't have asthma. He feels stuffed up, eyes burn a little, ect. He's allergic to a lot though: Cat and dog dander, dust is super high, rodents, and lots of trees and grass. We keep the place super clean and he knows how badly I want a cat. As much as I want one, I don't want him to be miserable.
My question is: for those who have cat and dog dander allergies but own those pets anyways, how did you make it work? Are you miserable all the time? Did you buy a specific breed that's more hypoallergenic? Do you find yourself cleaning up constantly to keep the allergies more at Bay? Any tips if we go through with it?
Absolute worst case is we don't own any. It would really suck as I really have a hard time imagining a life without a fluffy companion. I had to give my cat to my Ex that I had for four years when he and I split because I could not take her where I was going and that was really hard.
It would break my heart but I'm willing to make the sacrifice because I love him more. I could go volunteer once in a while to get my fix. But if other people have made it work then I'd really love to hear about it. Thanks everybody.
