Why does my cat hiss at new objects?

I know the simple answer is that she's scared but she's always very curious and will go up and sniff and explore but then out of nowhere, she'll hiss.

We got a new blender a month ago, she hissed at it and swung a few times at it (no blades on the blender).

Anytime I get her new toys, scratching posts, etc she will hiss and hide. I'll usually sit next to the object and invite her over to show her it's ok, but ideally I'd like her to feel comfortable and not rely on me being there. She's not and has never been aggressive or violent by any means. Even when I used to give her baths she wouldn't claw or bite me but she would hiss.

She's especially afraid of new people. She likes me, my husband and our roommate, but not guests. Anytime someone comes over she will hide immediately under our bed and stay there until the strangers are gone. I've tried inviting her out with treats and toys or waiting until she comes out of the bedroom on her own then shutting the bedroom door but then she just cries until I let her back in.

Is there a better way to deal with an anti-social scaredy cat and introduce her to new things/people?
