I’ve had my cat for almost 3 years and we have a good relationship. He loves to cuddle, give me head bumps, and for the most part I can do anything to him (rub his belly, pick him up, etc). He’s also very much a people person and loves attention when guests are over. Over the course of 6 months he has become completely obsessed with my roommate. The minute she comes home he races out of my room to be with her. He will completely abandon me for as long as she allows him in her room. He has zero interest in me when she’s around and it really hurts. I play with him, feed him treats, brush him, and pet him constantly.. but he would rather be in her presence than mine when she’s around.
What makes the situation worse is that I despise my roommate. She’s immature, spiteful, verbally abusive and manipulative. Living with her has been complete hell and I look forward to the day I’m out of this lease. It’s so frustrating that my cat is so enamored with someone who treats me like shit. I’ve tried to draw the line and set rules like:
“Don’t lock him in your room” “if he meows and scratches at your door ignore him”
But she oversteps those boundaries and will lock him in her room overnight and I won’t see him until the following day. Last week I informed her that I wanted to sublet in March and she threatened to break the lease and ruin both our credit if I tried. She became extremely aggressive over text and calls to the point I had to put her number on do not disturb. That night I came home from work completely stressed, wanting nothing more than to be with my cat, and what do you know? She locked him in her room. I texted her asking to let him out and she ignored me. I knocked on her door, she ignored me. I called out her name... ignored. I continued to knock until it got annoying and she flung the door open and asked why I was doing that. When I told her she ignored my texts and knocking she responded “I don’t have to answer you. I was going to open the door.” If she were a genuine and kind person it would not bother me as much, I would rather him get double the love, but she’s a terrible person.
I’m at my wits end and don’t know what to do. I’m so miserable and I want nothing more than my cats company & affection but it’s being showered on the person who is causing my grief.
Tl;dr : my cat has abandoned me for my evil roommate and I don’t know what to do.
