Dental surgery for 15 y/o dachshund with heart murmur

I found out over the summer that my sweet 15 y/o dachshund has a heart murmur, coupled with terrible periodontal disease. I usually have her teeth cleaned every year, and every year they remove a few.

Because of her new heart murmur, the veterinarian recommended that I let her be and skip the cleaning. Only now her mouth is gross, which I’m sure isn’t good for her overall health, let alone her comfort.

When the murmur was discovered, the doctor gave me the option of a $500 x-ray that would tell us more about what’s happening. She wasn’t pushy (in fact, she was the opposite) which I appreciate, but I’d also love some advice.

Has anyone else been through something similar? Would you go for the x-ray? Part of me wishes they had removed all of her teeth last year, or maybe that I had put more effort into brushing.

My dog is otherwise in good health (weight is great).
