I'm set to move to a new house within the next few weeks, and naturally, I'll be taking my cat Delilah with me. She's accustomed to being outdoors, and over the past two years, I've tried to get her accustomed to staying indoors for longer periods of time. It's somewhat worked, in that she spends most of her time inside the house, but she'd still be let out to do her business and it was easier to clear out her poops outside than handling kitty litter. I'm kicking myself now for not getting her used to kitty litter, though.
As of now, I'm doing my research on how to get my cat accustomed to a new home, and while I have a solid idea of what to do (namely, keeping her inside for an extended period of time, get her slowly acquainted to the house, maybe getting her a harness), I'm still kind of at a loss, especially if she doesn't take to staying inside (or if she ends up being let out without my permission, which does worry me a lot). Ideally, I want her to get used to being an indoor cat, so any tips would be of great help!
*For additional context - She's the first cat I've ever had, as I'm more used to dogs. I'm not sure what her age is specifically, though the vet estimates she has to be at least 5 years old, 7 at most. Behavior-wise, she's a pretty relaxed and easy-going girl, fairly talkative and no signs of any health issues. She literally just popped up in my yard when I first moved into this current house I'm in, so I know nothing about her previous living arrangements, including if she's ever used kitty litter before. She can be kept inside for large amounts of time (usually when I'm asleep) and she's never had accidents in the house before. She's well behaved enough to let me put on a collar for her and change it regularly, as well as letting people pet her and nuzzling her. She was also previously neutered when I first got her, but had no micro-chip. Like I said, she's likely a house cat who spent a few years living on her own. Don't know if any of this will help!
