Cat acting strange after moving house

We moved house with our cat 2 days ago. He came from my partner's family home where he lived with a few other cats, he's 1.5 years old. When we first moved in we did everything the internet said like letting him out in a small room, ensuring he had water, food, litter. He's used to a tray but WILL NOT poo in one in this house. He'd much rather go in the corner on my brand new carpet. He wees in it though.

He hides upstairs in the bedroom (where his food etc is) and hides under the quilt. He's purring, all over us, happy, when we are up there but he won't come downstairs.

How can I make this move easier for him and also get him to use the tray? I feel awful that I've put him through this stress and now he seems unhappy :( but I'm aware it's only the second day
