Hey, I'm the proud owner of a 10 month old kitty named Raven. Very sweet, but extremely intelligent cat. His intelligence makes it difficult to train him. We're thinking he's part Bombay due to his intelligent, completely black all over including paw pads and nose, and big golden eyes.
Anyway, let me just go in depth on his intelligence. When we got him as 3 month old kitten, he was very very skinny. He was being fostered with 18 other kittens, leading me to believe he might've been getting bullied off of food by the other kittens. Even today he's a complete softy and gets pushed around.
That's led to a big obsession with food. I've tried everything to lessen it. Give him a constant supply of dry food, giving him scheduled meals, nothing worked. Still obsessed. When he finishes his helping of wet food, he just breaks into the fridge and eats whatever we have in there. That could be leftovers, ham, prawns, anything. And yes, he opens the fridge himself, with his paw. I've videod him doing it. There's no handle on our fridge, you only need to pull it; he learned that very quickly by watching us and now he opens it himself and is a total nightmare.
He also eats anything he can find. Seeing him eating scraps from the floor isn't uncommon, and just today he started eating my DRY muesli like it was cat food!!! Wtf? It's also impossible cooking or baking around him. He watched my every move and starts lapping at the dough, batter, and tries to get into boiling hot pans if I let him. I have to remove him from the kitchen and then he starts yowling at the door.
How would I go about training him out of this obsession?|
Another thing; he doesnt' listen to me. I'd like to get him to come when he's called, but the only way of making that happen is rattling a box of treats. He's able to get into a box or a bag of treats (I left a box of Whiskas treats with him, you know the kind shaped like a cat face, he genuinely managed to get the lid off, rip off the plastic at the top, and start nomming the treats within 10 minutes) so he doesnt listen to me if I offer him treats. Because he knows he can just go find the box and get all the treats he wants.
I'm kinda at a loss. He's just too clever. Otherwise, he's very sweet and very very vocal, always chirping and trilling at me. He's super gentle and never, ever scratches or bites out of malice - only when he's playing will he give my ankles little kitten nibbles. Any tips on what to do?
