Found a litter of kittens in my backyard

As the title says we found a litter of three kittens in our backyard under a pile of lumber, they seem to be around 4 or 5 weeks. They look healthy and well fed but it’s very hot where I live, reaching 100 degrees this week. I put out a bowl of water and food for mama cause she’s been walking around the neighborhood.

I called the local animal shelter and they said said since we see mama cat wandering the neighborhood that we should let them be and let her take care of them. She’s been coming into our yard for weeks before we discovered the babies. Shelter said they will be fine and they can’t do anything unless we call them again to set up traps when they’re older.

I’m having trouble with this because I’m a huge animal lover and feel very emotional towards animals in need. I want to rehome the kittens myself to make sure they don’t end up as strays but I don’t know how to do this without disturbing them too much. And I want to make sure they don’t stay outside too long and then become feral.

How would I go about capturing these kittens once they are old enough to be given to forever homes? Should I even attempt this in my own or just let animal control do it? I feel very torn and conflicted on what to do. Please give advice.
