My cat (Worm) is 4 years old and has been living with my and my bf for 2 years. He has always been an extremely sweet and gentle cat and has never so much as hissed at me.
Tonight, Worm was sitting on the floor and my boyfriend put his hand over him for a second. He sometimes does that to play gently and Worm will usually bat at his hand gently or lick it. However, this time, Worm immediately jumped up and hissed at him, and then started howling and moaning at him. I've never heard noises like that from a cat. It was like he was possessed. My bf immediately backed away but Worm followed him, making horrible noises the whole time. My bf hid in another room and closed the door, and Worm started scratching at the door trying to follow him, still shrieking.
After a few minutes of bf being absolutely silent, Worm calmed down slightly and I was able to give him some wet food and even pet him. He showed zero aggression towards me.
Worm is currently locked in the kitchen (with food and water and a bed). When I go in the kitchen, he basically ignores me and does not move his eyes away from the door. At the smallest noise outside the door or hint that my bf is close, he starts freaking out again.
I'm super confused because he's never showed any sort of aggression before. He's always been incredibly sweet to me and my bf so I don't know where this came from. We weren't playing with him or petting him prior to this, he has no injuries, he's an indoor cat and spayed, and nothing major has changed in the household lately.
I feel so awful for both Worm and my boyfriend right now. Does anyone have any ideas of what could have caused this or how to resolve it??
