My cat might be depressed or sick?

A month ago my boyfriend and I adopted a beautiful black cat named Salem. Salem was very lonely and crying a lot, three weeks later we had decided to adopt another cat (Empress Mittens) He was very wary and scared (pissed off as well) he started getting used to her but we think he became depressed. I know depression can happen to animals with sudden change or an addition of another animal, his appetite changed (he doesn’t eat or drink a lot) he sleeps all the time, doesn’t hide yet he still somewhat will play and accept love. All typical signs of animal depression BUT he gags, like he is choking on a hair ball but nothing comes out. Salem gags so hard sometimes that he farts, his eyes are constantly dilated and I’m worried about him. I’m not sure wether it is actually depression, if he is sick or just trying to pass a hairball (this has been going on almost a week) Should I take him to the vet or ride it out? I have wheatgrass for him and I’ve been giving him a little melted butter to help oil his innards (I have done a lot of googling) he’s my baby and I don’t know what to do.
