Trying to find a cool pet that is a good fit

I am in search of something a bit more exotic than the typical dog / cat. I would love a Koala Bear or Hippo, but don't have the space or means for this. It needs to be fairly smaller. I have a nice yard, but also work and might need to use a large cage area at times. Being able to travel on my motorcycle would be nice as well. I would like to go visit family and put the pet in my backpack. Needs to be able to safely travel, I don't want the pet to be scared and worried.

I was thinking maybe a rabbit would be good, but kind of want something a bit more exotic. Ideally a pet that is happy on their own a bit for when I am busy, but also likes to be played with when I want to play with them. I am not going to want to spend every second with the pet, but that's not to say I would treat them poorly. I am more concerned with finding the right fit so that I don't have an unhappy pet. I wanted a skunk, but after reading I decided it just wouldn't be a good fit for me.

Reptiles or fish kind of fit into what I'm saying, but I don't like how interactive they are. Fish bore me, but maybe some sort of lizard, if they are cool and interactive though. Any thoughts on pets to look into would be great, I don't want to get a pet that is a bad fit. I would like to avoid situations that have a high chance to result in expensive vet bills. I would not leave my pet in pain, but if I can avoid one that is costly and typically requires many visits, that would be ideal. Food is not an issue, I eat very healthy and have a large garden. Fresh veggies, herbs, fruits all over the place.
