Hi All, I usually never post, but I could really use some advice. I have a cat that I found when he was 5 weeks old (he’s almost 4 now). He is very aggressive and it is entirely unpredictable. He will lunge at my dogs when they are just standing near him, he will swipe and hiss at my husband and I when we just walk past him, and he will bite and swipe at us when we try to pet him. He is also impossible to handle; brushing him, trimming his nails, etc., is awful, and usually ends up with him losing his shit and tearing my hands and arms up. My husband hates him, my friends and family are terrified of him, and I am so desperate to help him, but I’m running out of ideas. We have him on Prozac, but it doesn’t do much, and I can’t afford a professional behavioralist. I’ve tried working with him myself, but I don’t know what his triggers are (since it seems like he has so many different types of aggression) and I haven’t made any progress. It’s breaking my heart because I love him, despite how mean he is, and I don’t want to rehome him (like my husband wants me to), because I know no one would ever take him or he’d be put down. I want to help him, I just don’t know how. He does have moments when he can be really sweet and cuddly, and he seems to tolerate me the most, so I know he does have the capacity to be sweet. And sometimes when you go to pet him, he tries to bite at first, and then realizes you’re just petting him, and he calms down and enjoys it. I don’t have any kids, and this cat is like my baby, and I just want to help him.
