I have a 3 year old indoor/outdoor cat that won’t stay at home for more than a day. She’s been with us since she was a kitten and she is spayed/neutered. Normally she would leave the house during the day but wouldn’t go further than our garden for more than a couple of hours to hunt and she’d almost always come back for dinner. There would be times where she missed dinner for one night but we knew she’d always be in the house by midnight. Lately she only comes back into the house for one day in the week, eats her dinner, sleeps and then is gone for the next 5-6 days. I’m not even comfortable with her going out for a couple of hours during the day so you can imagine how distressing it is for me. I really worry about her. This also disrupts our vet schedule etc because we schedule an appointment for routine shots and check ups but on the day we find out that she left the house during the night and we can’t find her.
(I want to add that we don’t live anywhere dangerous. We live in a quiet village where there is not a lot of traffic where they can be harmed. She also doesn’t get in to a lot of fights with other cats.)
(She also knows how to open doors and windows so even when we try to keep her inside the home without letting her out (yes we tried to) she finds a way to get out.)
My dad thinks she goes somewhere to hide because she seems afraid of everything when she is at home. She runs away and hides when someone she doesn’t know comes to our house. I know it is usual for cats to hide in these situations but she seems more fearful compared to how she used to be. When you look at her she looks TERRIFIED. She also became extremely scared of every noise and other neighbour’s cats. She goes into hiding when she hears a loud noise or sees another cat. This is unusual for her because she used to be a very courageous cat. She wouldn’t attack other cats but she once attacked a fucking snake and we don’t even know where she found the snake because we don’t have snakes where I live? She also hunts a lot so she was not really a coward cat.
My dad thinks finding the snake in our garden is the reason why she is so afraid now and he thinks she goes into hiding somewhere she thinks is safer.
Is there a way I can encourage her to stay at home more often and help her get rid of her fear?
