I did some brief research and learned about the importance of keeping kibble in the original packaging bag where it has a grease barrier that keeps the fats in the food from going rancid and prolongs the life of the food. Therefore, I feel like the best approach would be to have a 5-10lb dry airtight dry food container where I would refill it weekly from the bag of kibble (and wash it when it's empty to remove the residual fat that could potentially spoil the next batch that goes in). I think this might be a better approach than to open the large bag of kibble twice a day and constantly expose all the food to fresh oxygen.
It looks like the Gamma2 Vittles Airtight Storage Container is quite popular and recommended, but despite the overall great reviews, it seems the plastic breaking at the lid screwing point is a major point of failure. it's also way too big for one cat (the 5 lb version isn't airtight according to reviews. There are many plastic containers but I haven't looked much into them--I prefer steel where it's more durable and the food won't be exposed to sunlight (for additional freshness).
Any ideas much appreciated.
