Our family a few months ago got a pet German Shepherd, she is about a year and a half old and we got her from a breeder we trust who took her as a pick of the litter, but did not have the drive she wanted. Understandably the dog was extremely shy at first in a new environment with new people, but since then has grown extremely attached to my mother and trusts my youngest sister, but backs away when anyone else comes within 10 feet of her.
Recently, for 10 days I was the only person home to take care of her, and at first she was just as shy as before, but she slowly began to grow comfortable and started acting with me the same as she was with my mother before. Since their return things have more or less reverted.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this, or if I am doing something wrong in my interactions with her, if anyone needs more details I would be happy to provide them, I just do not know what questions have answers that are important.
Also for anyone who reads this and immediately pounces on the adopt don't shop, the catalyst for getting this dog was a new rehab home opened two doors away, with a car break in that happened within the first 5 days of the first patients moving in, and as such is as much for peace of mind as a member of our family.
