I recently adopted a very small 9 year old cat about a week ago. She has been lovely overall. Didn’t really hide, wants to hang out constantly, etc. Her foster brought her old litter box which I set up and would see her use. I live in a small space (this cat has always lived in small apartments) and needed to move out a shelf in the bathroom just to fit her box. I found a litter box cabinet with a magnetic door that would allow me some shelf space and also contain the box. The first night, I left the door open and scooped first thing in the morning (I do it minimum once a day). She had peed. "Great! She gets it", I thought. I left the door open again, went to sleep and woke up to poop on 2 areas of the bathroom floor and pee in the litter box. I realize that the new box cover might be different, but I’d really like this to work. How do I help her transition to this new cover? It’s big, she’s small. I’m leaving the door open. Is this likely to get better with time? Advice appreciated!
Extra info: She had diarrhea the first day at my place, but hasn't had an issue since. She never covers her poop for reasons I cannot understand. She also vomited this morning (potentially unrelated, but noted-- keeping an eye on it). She doesn't seem angry. I cleaned and when I went back to bed, she jumped right next to me for a cuddle.
