Adopting adult cat and adult dog

My wife and I have no kids and lost our one cat over the summer. We'd like another cat, but also a small dog. We found an adult cat to adopt, he's coming from Texas to the Northwest and will be here early next week. Meanwhile, she found an adult male beagle, about 4 years old up for adoption locally and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow. I've always been interested in beagles so I'm excited to meet him.

The cat has been living with other dogs and children with his foster family. We made sure to find a cat that was ok with dogs.

What do you think about adopting a dog and cat close in time and bringing them both into a new home, given the dog is okay with cats as well? I assume things will be tense for both pets even without the other.

We have a medium size house, about 2k sq ft, and a small back yard. I'm not so concerned with a time commitment as just the potential stress for the pets. My wife works from home and I work half time at home so we can tend to them regularly.
