Cat hiding under couch

New-ish cat owner. I had a kitten for the first time in June but he sadly passed in July from pneumonia and it was very traumatic. But a week ago, I acquired his brother (who’s about 7-8 months) from my girlfriend’s sister who was about to give him up. Upon initial meeting, he let me pet him, purred slightly and even had his little butt in the air as I did so. But I turned away for a minute and he was under the couch and he’s pretty much stayed there the entire time. I think it’s getting more comfortable eating now and he uses the litter box easily. My girlfriend even caught him in the bathroom one morning and when she went to pet him, she said he lunged at her and ran back under the couch.

I’ve read some things to say leave him where he is and let him come out when he’s ready. Should I continue that? I speak out loud whenever I enter the living room when I come home from work, I check under the couch and talk to him there for a few seconds. Is he fine? Is everything normal?
