Hi all,
I have a two-year-old cat stray cat that has been living with us for the past 7 months. He is the most affectionate, loyal, and quirky cat. He sleeps with my partner and me and loves the attention from my other visiting family members. He’s never aggressive, hisses, never pees outside his litter box, and does not do anything I deemed as bad behavior. To note, this is my first pet ever, and having him made me change my whole perspective of cats for the better.
One of my pals own a cat and has to leave the states in an emergency. He asked me to cat sit for him and prefer I bring the cat in my home instead. I didn’t mind helping, plus it seems he has no other option.
I brought his cat home, separated the two in different rooms and kept the cats out of sight. They smelled each other under the door and was curious. My cat did hiss at the door a bit the first night. Seeing as the room I had my friend’s cat in was uninhabitable, I let them greet so my buddy’s cat could be in the main living space once I felt like they were both calm (4 days after buddy’s cat arrival). My cat’s hair did puff up at the sight of the other cat and he got in an aggressive stance. I calmed him down by petting him and gave him treats. The two eventually approached each other and bumped noses. I thought that things went well and they could coexist for the next two weeks.
That very night, my cat did not come to bed as he normally does, which I found odd. Then at 6 in the morning, started meowing very loudly. (He does this here and there as he’s a chatty one, but not to this extent). His meows eventually lowered in pitch and that’s when I realized he could be stressed.
For the next few days, he became aloof, standoffish, and stopped being the purring machine that he is. He doesn't want to be near us, let alone let us pet him. He just meows more and in such a depressive pitch.
As for interaction with my buddy’s cat, he’s doing a combination of hissing (only once before I deescalated), nose bumping, grooming (odd), aggressive playing, and chasing.
This morning, my cat finally hopped on the bed for the first time in 5 days. He headed to his side of the bed and begin digging, sat down, and peed. I am extremely shocked and sad that my cat’s personality has changed so drastically.
Knowing that my cat may be stressed, if I return my buddy’s cat to him once my friend returns, will my cat return to normal? How will he react to the scent of the other cat now in his living space? Is there anything I can do to better his state of mind?
