Happy National Vet Tech Week (USA)

National Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week is each year during the second full week in October. This is a chance for veterinary clinics and hospitals to thank and recognize what many consider the backbone of the veterinary practice: our valued Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs).

Veterinary technicians have completed an accredited two-year degree while veterinary technologists have completed an accredited four-year degree. Vet techs have to pass an exam to earn the license and must complete continuing education requirements to maintain that license. While the veterinarian diagnoses pets, prognoses their diseases, performs surgeries, and prescribes medications, a licensed vet tech can (and often does) do everything else.

Vet techs are versatile and highly-trained experts. Compared to human medicine, a vet tech can serve as a laboratory technician, a respiratory therapist, a dietician, a nurse, a radiation tech, an anesthesiologist, and a physical therapist in a single role. Although veterinarian offices can’t function without the contributions of vet techs, their contributions to pet healthcare are often underestimated. This recognition week provides all veterinary practices the chance to thank and recognize the many important contributions our veterinary technicians provide.
