Just need some reassurance about my cat and dog

We got a new dog some time back. Initially my cats weren't particularly bothered by him, but over time as he's gained confidence, one cat has gone into hiding. He stays in my room all day, where the dog isn't allowed. He has all his needs there, is eating and using the litterbox normally, he just won't leave. He likes under the bed most, occasionally venturing out to sit on the landing over the main floor of the house where the dog is. The dog doesn't harass the cats, mind you. He's just big and scary, I guess.

I know this is temporary, eventually my cat will be okay and venture downstairs with everyone else, but right now it's worrying me and making me feel guilty for having the dog. Add that to the fact that the dog was supposed to be my father's but he never stepped up and instead chose to make me the major caregiver, and sometimes I end up with less than happy thoughts about dog ownership. It certainly isn't his fault, he's a good boy who just wants to be loved, it's just hard to see what is essentially a stranger show up and have such an impact on this cat who is my baby. But he won't be a stranger forever. It will be okay.

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest and maybe get some reassurances that my cat will emerge and reclaim his throne one day. I'm under a lot of stress with the dog and other responsibilities lately, so every issue feels catastrophic. It's nice to get an outside view.
