My dog “holds it” for much longer than he has to

I have a rescue I adopted 3 months ago. He’s house-trained and does not pee inside but the thing that has been worrying me lately is that he will hold his pee for 12 hours or more overnight even when I take him out multiple times.

We go for a walk around 6 or 7 pm every night and he does his business. I let him out around 9 or 10 pm before bed and usually he won’t go. Then I wake up around 430 or 5 am and let him out again, and he still won’t go.

I usually stand outside with him and I lead him to his normal pee spot with no luck. I’ve tried making him go out alone but he just sits at the door and patiently waits for me to let him back in.

Then eventually he will go around 6:30 or 7 am, which is 12 hours from when he went prior.

I’ve checked for accidents inside and I don’t see any. I see him drink water at night so I don’t think he’s dehydrated, and any other time he pees during the day he doesn’t seem to have a problem peeing. I just don’t know why he holds it so long when I give him the opportunity not to.
