Need some urgent advice about my cat

I hope this is the right subreddit for questions about cat health. This is my last resort since all the vets in my place (not America) don't value cats as much as dogs and have failed to allay my fears about my cat's condition.

My cat, Piki is a neutered 2 year old male. A few days ago, he developed a huge swelling on his back at the base of his tail. I am pretty sure the neighbour's dog (honestly a menace that they let roam free) swiped at him. Piki would ran around frantically, licking at his back and I was worried he might have developed an abscess. A vet came by, said it was probably a hematoma or a muscle sprain and prescribed paracetamol syrup.

Piki wouldn't eat and hid in a toilet for most of the day. He only ever sleeps in his own bed but for the past 2 days he refused to leave my side at night and slept on my lap while I dozed off sitting up. Come morning, there is a huge gaping wound under his tail on the right side and a heck load of pus on the blankets. IT WAS AN ABSCESS.

I rushed him to another vet and he gave me gentamicin cream to apply on his wound. He told me to give Piki the tetanus vaccination myself and I had to google how to do it. So that's his medical history. I have a couple of questions.

  1. He licks the cream right off. The vet says he doesn't need a cone so I don't know how the cream is going to work if he keeps licking it off. Do I bandage the site?
  2. It's a coin sized hole. Do I need to cage him so he doesn't contaminate it? The size of the wound is scary tbh.
  3. I'll be leaving for a week at the end of this month. Is there any chance it may heal by then? I'll look into postponing my flights if not.

The vets here actually have the nerve to laugh in my face and say "Pfft don't worry about it" when I ask furthur questions. I haven't added any pictures of the wound lest it be against the rules of the sub.
