What small pet should I get while away from home? Should I?

Hello! So in my family’s house, we have a tropical community aquarium and 2 cats. I moved away for 2nd year university (roughly an hour away) and still miss them a lot. I really love animals and their company. However, this second year, I’m not in university accommodation anymore so i am able to have a pet this year with the landlord’s permission. Now the question is should I even get a pet and which one?

During university, most of my lessons are online anyways and I always have a bunch of housemates home so they can do feeding if I’m away too. I would also have to bring them back home during the holidays so I would prefer a smaller one that doesn’t take too much space and also not free-roaming as the cats would definitely kill it. Its enclosure would be kept in my room, both at uni and at home. (The cats also sleep in my room at home but the enclosure would be raised away from their reach)

Right now, the only animal I have in mind is a crested gecko. Not too comfortable on keeping live feeder insects at the moment so I’m leaning towards cresties.

I’m not looking into any small mammals as the cats would give them a hard time and don’t have a lot of space for very very big enclosures. Anything aquatic is out of the question too since there would be difficulty transporting it from each house.

Would really appreciate honest opinions and advice! Thank you! :)
