Adopted a cat today. As I understand it, it had lived at shelter since Dec. or so. It's about 5 years old. Warmed up quick in the meeting room...liked being a lap kitty, belly rubs, etc. Liked attention.
Adopted.
I used my friend's carrier, and they had sprayed some Feliway in it to help with the 40 min drive home. The shelter put the cats bed in the carrier because they knew he liked it, and it would carry his scent/something familiar for him.
Brought him home, set him in the kitchen/dining area i have set up for him to acclimatize to. Litter, food, water, water fountain all there.
Opened the door on the carrier at 3 pm.... and he hasn't come out yet (9pm). Sometimes he'll look at me... other times he's laying, burying his face in the edge of the bed.
I sat on the other end of the room and read and napped some. and i've left the room to stay out of his space. I think i've once heard a meow... and when i went to check, still in the carrier.
I've read tons of posts, etc and understand this is very stressful for the cat (especially, thinking about it, the house is pretty damn quite compared to the shelter with a ton of mewing cats in the other cages surrounding him).
One friend suggested taking the top off the carrier...but i figure if he's using the space for security, that's not helping.
I'll leave him alone til morning...but wondering how long is too long.
