Hi, first time posting in r/pets! I hope I'm doing this right :)
My husband and I recently adopted a beautiful 2 year old cat from the Humane Society. When I first met her she was in the adult cat room, and overwhelmed. When I approached her she hissed at me, but I couldn't stop thinking about her. When I went back she wad placed in the kitten room. She was a lot less stressed, accepted pats and seemed to enjoy cuddling with the cats in the room. Upon adoption I was shocked to discover she was pregnant when they got her (she had been there for 6 months prior to adoption). She gave birth to part of the litter, which was still-born. They had to surgically remove the rest of the litter- none of them survived.
It's been a month and a half and she loves hiding. She comes out when we're sleeping at night to enjoy our space (her fur is white and she'll leave some on our furniture). Though if shes out of her spot and hears footsteps she rushes to hide.
I visit her hiding spot daily to feed her and give her attention (I'll give her little treats through the day too). I started using Feliway and she seems to respond positively to. We've been bonding more, and she loves getting pats and belly rubs. She doesn't meow, so she uses her paws and body language to communicate- it's literally the cutest thing ever. She's so gentle too. (Today she just rested her head on my hand and purred for a long time!)
I don't expect her to be the cuddliest, and most personable cat. My goal is to help her adjust to our space and us to the point where she doesn't feel she needs to hide all day to enjoy our space? Anyone have suggestions on helping a cat adjust in these situations?? I would really love to hear feedback and stories about your experience adopting your cat! Thank you! :)
