Cat purring very loud, causing a kind of gulping and sometimes a little drool

So my 10 year old indoor cat has started purring really really hard over the last few weeks (I usually only notice when it's in the mornings or when I get home from work, so assumed he was just really happy) but he also gulps while he does this as though he's salivating too much. I picked him up just now and he had a little drool on his chin also. I'm not sure if it's maybe something to do with the weather as I know cats can have allergies like hay-fever (I live in the Scotland so pollen count had just started to get higher as the purring started), anyone got any idea if it could be allergy related or if they have experienced this before and know what else it could be? Other than that he's eating normally, going to the litter tray normally, playing and running around still, nothing else seems to be out of place.
