First time using flea/tick repellent on cat concerns and suggestions?

Hello r/Pets. I've never posted before and barely lurked, however I am in need of some advice and I am having a hard time finding it online. I also called the vet for some guidance but they were unable to help me.

I first want to preface by saying that if there were a safer way to prevent my cat from the dangers of fleas and ticks, I would do that. I shudder at the idea of putting a pesticide directly on my cat.. However she loves the outdoors in the summer and I recently moved to a woody area and just found a tick on her the other day. Since then I have kept her inside until I could get a repellent.

I purchased PetArmor for cats and followed the instructions this morning (holding animal down, applying directly to skin just above the shoulder blades, continuing to restrain for a few seconds so the liquid could be absorbed by her coat). She is so far acting fine besides some light itching of the application site, which the box said could happen.

What I am concerned about is that I don't see how I can avoid having her ingest at least a small amount of the pesticide. She's been itching with her back foot and between that and attempting to turn her head around like an owl to lick it, the application site has seemed to spread just a tad down the sides. She is also a diligent cleaner so I know she's going to lick her foot at some point. I have already attempted to remove some of the pesticide from her foot and claws with a wash cloth and water, but then she just started licking her foot more because it was wet...

So if anyone on here has any suggestions on how to minimize her ingestion of the pesticide, I would really appreciate it. Any tips or tricks? I've thought about maybe getting some sort of cat clothing to cover the area for the first day that it's applied? I am 100% against clothing for animals unless it serves a purpose, but I also know that she would hate it.. However with that I worried about the clothing absorbing more of the pesticide and it not being as effective... I've also thought about putting booties on her back feet but again, I'm sure she'd hate that and would probably get them off because, well, she's a cat.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
