Food obsessed cat

So my friend and "room mate" (we share 7 acres of land, live in separate cabins and use a third cabin as a kitchen + dinning room) adopted a cat about one year ago. He's currently 2 years old and he's the sweetest cat I've ever seen, very affectionate and he follows us around all the time, but he has a very problematic obsession with food. He will eat almost anything, including some vegetables, he jumps on the table when we're cooking and is constantly trying to steal our food.

He also randomly begs to get his plate filled with food even when there's already plenty (as in half full or more). He even wakes us up in the night and wants us to come with him to his plate to watch him eat for some reason.
He also hunts a lot, like at least 2 times per day on average, and since we live by the countryside he actually gets to hunt some pretty big prey.
He eats so so much he's already pretty fat even considering he's just two years old and is an incredibly active cat (wanders a lot, plays, hunts).
My friend isn't helping with his case either. During the first 8 months or so he would only feed the cat at given times during the day and never gave him human food, but the cat never learnt and even got more and more obsessed with food until eventually my friend started giving him food (he sees it as "sharing" and that it was breaking his heart to see him so desperate for a piece of food). I don't really care about it myself because I don't give him food and I get him off the table each time he jumps on it while I'm eating / cooking, and I just close my cabin doors and windows so he can't wake me up during the night, but I feel like he's gonna get sick eventually of all that food, like I can't emphasize enough how much this cat overeats.
Am I overreacting to this? Should I just ignore it all and let them be?
