How do I know if my current cat will accept a kitten?

My girlfriend and I have a smallish apartment (800sqft?) and our cat (F, neutered, no front claws) we've had for about 6 years. We've never known how old she is but estimate around 12-16. She's mostly a calm, loving lap cat but still likes to play sometimes and will run around on occasion. Before we got her she was living with another cat that was a bit of a bully. She's had very limited experience with other cats or even other animals but has mostly just hissed at all of them.

We have an opportunity to adopt a kitten (F, will be ready to leave mother in a couple weeks). Don't know too much about her personality yet. The mother is very friendly.

Obviously we would love a kitten, but we aren't sure how our current cat would handle it. Is there any way to know? Thanks.
