How to help a possibly lonely cat

So I have a 13 year old cat who I am worried is starting to become lonely. I have recently taken a job in another city that has me away from home 5 days a week. He has to stay back home with my roommate who takes great care of him. Lately he has started to become much more vocal especially after I leave, and I'm worried he is getting lonely.

He has grown up around other cats and has only had issues with my sisters male cat. The problem is other cats tend to really dislike him. He's a large boy (his normal weight is around 12 lbs) and likes to play chase, which has scared off other cats he's been introduced to in the past. I really want to get him a companion but don't know the best way to go about it. I've thought about getting a younger kitten in hopes they would be more likely to get used to him.

Any thoughts and advice welcome!
