12 years ago, my cat had kittens. We had no intention of keeping any of them, as she had snuck out and gotten knocked up before we'd had a chance to have her fixed.
When the babies came, they were all black like their mom, except for one gray one. This kitten would sniff me out and crawl toward me even before his eyes were open.
Once they could walk, the gray kitten followed me everywhere. When all the other kittens wouldn't leave their moms side, he was attached to me for some reason.
I fell in love.
Of course I convinced my husband to let me keep him. I named him Sabbeth, and for 12 years he was my constant. If I was sitting down, he was on my lap sleeping. If I was walking around the house, he was right behind me.
He was the sweetest cat. All the other animals we've brought into the house over the years, dogs and cats alike, he was always the first one they got along with.
Today, I pet him and talked to him and told him I loved him as he took his last breaths. And I continued petting him and talking to him for almost an hour after he was gone... Until my husband made me let him put him in a box before he got too stiff.
We buried him at the back of my sister-in-laws yard, as it's illegal to bury pets in the city limits where we live.
I guess I just wanted to tell somebody who didn't already know that Sabbeth was an amazing cat and companion. He comforted me through heartbreaks and made me laugh when I didn't think I could. I loved that cat more than I thought possible to love an animal.
Hug your fur babies extra tight today. When they do little things that annoy you... Or even big things that really make you mad... Just remember that they only live a short time, and while they're here, you are their world. Don't wait until they're gone to show them that they're your world too.
