Is it Worth Getting Dental Surgery on my 12 Year Old Dog?

Hopefully this doesn't come off as callous, I'm just trying to be a pragmatist. My dog is almost 12-which is the age his breed lives to be (on average), and we just came back from the vet who said his teeth had declined a lot from the last year he was here (they used to be great, they had commented," but one is now rotten and they think they should extract a couple because his gums are started to get infected. Anyway, it's a very costly procedure and for something that isn't necessarily life or death, more just ease of life, I'm wondering if this is necessary on a dog so old?
