Hi, first things first, I love my dogs, they are spoiled and happy and up to date on all of their shots, have access to good food and water and three beds as well as the couch to sleep on.
Second, I am really looking for other thoughts and opinions here, so, please be be nice.
Anyway, on to the meat of the question.
We have a about 3 year old Australian cattle dog mix.
He was a street dog that started living in my moms garage for about 5 months, no posted or anything looking for him, no facebook, no collar or chip (sadly in SC its really common to just abandon dogs) So when we went to visit my mom (we are in pa) we fell in love, and took him home.
We got him all his shots, got him fixed, and treated for heartworm. We love this dog. But here is my issue. He is nearly blind. When we first got him before we took him to the vet we actually thought he was a old dog because he could not see and bump into things.
We brought him to a dog eye doctor and they said he had 85-90% vision loss. There was nothing we could really do, but we could put him on pills that may let him keep his vision a little bit longer. (ocuglow if anyone is familiar)
So we did that, and have been doing that for 6+ months now. But, its getting to the point where I am not sure if its worth it.
1. He doesn't the pills.
2. Its 70 bucks every 45 days. And yes I know, people will say "well don't have a dog if you can't afford it" but it is not about affording it.
3. I would guess at this point he has less then 10% eyesight left.
I guess I am just wondering if it is "worth" it anymore. If he doesn't like the pills (even in pill pockets) and we have to make him take them, and he has so little vision left, is it worth still trying. Even at 10% vision, can he really actually see more then blobs?
Sorry, i guess I put so much preface in this because I personally feel guilty. But please tell me what you guys think.
Side note: He does not care about being blind, if he did you would never know it. He runs around the house like a spaz, up and down stairs, jumping on and off of couches, he runs around in the back yard. He is a little cautious in new places but even on walks he does not actually seem to be shy or afraid. He is a big old happy spoiled pup.
Side note 2: I am at work but I will put dog tax as soon as I am at home!
