Need advice about renting and cats

Ok, so I have a pet dilemma that I have no idea how to solve. My husband and I rescued two starving cats, notified our landlord, paid the pet deposit, did all we were supposed to. Then it turns out one of them is giving birth, like right then, way too late to end the pregnancy. So we wind up with four kittens, and then immediately spay the original cats. We contacted every single animal shelter and rescue and humane society in the area, and when they turned out to all be full we branched out further, willing to drive a ways. Every place was overflowing and wouldn't even consider taking any of the cats. We contacted every friend we had, advertised in the paper and online. We used every resource available to try to find them homes. Time passed as we tried to find them homes until they had reached that age where people aren't interested in adopting. I volunteer at a local humane society, and I've learned that people want kittens or elderly cats. Cats just beyond the kitten stage through about age 7 or so are not wanted.

So our landlord decided it had taken us too long to find them a home and if we didn't either dump them or have them put down we'd have to leave. I think it is immoral and terrible to put down perfectly healthy, happy animals. They are beautiful, they love each other to death, they are well-behaved and not destructive, we are responsible pet owners. Our place does not stink, we have plenty of litter boxes and clean them at least once a day. We learned that the pound would put down the cats immediately if we left them there because they're so filled with kittens this time of year. We told the landlord if the choice is our sweet kitties being killed or us leaving we'll leave. We were already close to the end of our lease, so she's letting us finish it, which means it shouldn't show up on our record as an eviction. I'm worried though that she's going to give us a really negative reference because she was really pissed and was genuinely baffled as to why it was a big deal to put them down. Most apartments have pet limits, so I'm not sure what to do about that. We're looking into buying a condo because a few in the area are really cheap, but if that doesn't work out because of my husband's massive student debt idk what to do.

Any advice?
