Need advice for a pet Starling(bird)

Hi, I’m not sure where else to post this. If anyone could recommend a more appropriate sub that’d be great.

So we (my husband and I) have added a little European starling to our family. They’re very common in our area (in most of America, apparently), so it was very easy to figure out what kind of bird it was even before it started to grow feathers. It seems like it fell or was pushed out of the nest shortly after hatching, since when we found it is was without feathers, couldn’t stand on its own, and wasn’t eating on its own, just gaping (holding its mouth open for food).

Fast forward about 3 weeks and the bird survived, grew feathers, and can fly freely for short distances. But he still won’t eat on his own. Won’t even attempt to pick up food. But he has no problem picking up twigs in his enclosure, or pulling my husbands hair (this bird loves to sit on my husbands shoulder and atop his head). So how do I convince him to at least try to pick up the food?

And how much attention should I be giving Bird? It seems like he wants our attention because he will perch on our shoulders/laps/heads and ‘scream’ for some reason. I say scream, because usually he chirps quietly to himself while he explores his room. But this is more like the screaming version of chirping. And he’ll do it right in my ear, too. Right now he’s on my shoulder trying to play with my earring, while screaming.

Although he’s technically a wild city bird, we won’t release him. He wouldn’t last a day out there. He isn’t fearful of our other animals at all. In fact, he likes to perch on our German shepherds back! We’re fine keeping him, we planned on getting a pet bird this summer anyway.

He likes to watch my husband and I play borderlands. That’s usually the only time when he’s calm and quiet, is if the tv is making noise, and usually I have YouTube playing music up there. Little bastard apparently really likes the new Cage The Elephant album.

Edit: forgot to add, when we talk to him, he chirps back louder, as if he’s trying to talk to us. Are starlings known to do that?
