Hello,
We got my girlfriends cat at a rescue shelter. Although incredibly sweet, the little monster would regularly poop under people's beds and apparently on a bed once.
She finally got that out of her system and doesn't seem to do that anymore. However now she's gotten into the habit of pooping next to our toilet. We don't know why she does this and we've tried making sure the litter box is clean, making sure she has food and water. We've taken her to the vet where they've gotten a fecal sample (twice) and said nothing is wrong with her.
She still uses the litter box, in fact even when she was pooping under beds she uses the litter box. She never pees anywhere except the litter box, we simply keep finding poop next to the toilet. And she's not afraid to poop on front of us either.
She only does it once per day, always in the evening when I'm in bed (gf works nights, though she'll also do it on nights gf is home). And the smell, oh God her poop stinks worse than any other cat I've known (we've brought this up to two different vets who have taken fecal samples. They thought it we'd weird but no issues in fecal). We've also tried changing the food over the smell. The smell we can handle when it's in the litter box but not when it's outside the box.
Oh yeah, she also scratches at the bathroom tile as if she's trying to bury her poo (which she's never been successful at even when she does poop in the litter box). The poop is always solid and never liquidity.
This has been going on ever since we got her from the rescue 7 months ago, she was estimated to be around 2 - 3 months old when we got her.
