Hi all, my dog Drake is 10 years old, black lab golden retriever cross. He has had bloat once before and did not get the surgery which prevents stomach flipping. Two days ago Drake had his front left leg amputated. He is in a lot of pain and is on three different medications. Since the amputation, he has eaten normally but hasn’t passed a stool at all. Tonight, we were concerned about the possibility of bloat because his stomach was very tight, but this could also just be constipation. We gave him a dose of Gas-X and since then his stomach has been gurgling a fair bit and he’s gone to sleep, but he still hasn’t passed any gas.
I’m very concerned that he won’t display bloat’s trademark symptoms because of the pain meds he’s on and how exhausted he is. Last time he had bloat, his stomach filled up under his rib cage and it was virtually impossible to see any distention without an Xray. Every website says to watch for pacing, whining/discomfort, rapid breathing, and drooling, but Drake can barely stand, he’s on heavy duty painkillers which may mask any stomach pain, he’s been breathing rapidly since the amputation bc he’s tired and stressed, and the meds make him drool.
Is there anything that could give me some peace of mind here?? I’m just so scared I’m going to fall asleep and wake up to my dog going into shock. It would break my heart to know he went through a huge amputation and then died suffering from bloat just a few days later. I’m so stressed. Please give any advice or anecdotes you have. My family is very unwilling to rush him into the vet when he’s not showing any signs besides constipation, which is totally understandable because the amputation wasn’t cheap and treating potential bloat isnt either. Is it likely that the pain of bloat would be enough to push through his painkillers? He’s on metacam and gabapentin.
