We have two dogs, one is a terrier (Max), and one is a lab mix (Rusty). When we tried to introduce Max to Rusty, Rusty became very aggressive, barking and trying to attack Max. We have been unable to condition him to be comfortable around Max.
A month ago, my grandmother forgot to put Max in the other room before she let Rusty out to go outside into the backyard. He attacked Max, leaving Max with deep gashes and terrible injuries. I was there to separate them before Max would’ve been killed. We took Max to the vet and they put drainage tubes in Max’s wounds, as well as stitched up any other gashes.
The last straw came recently. The neighbors got a new puppy, and it somehow found it’s way into our backyard from theirs. Rusty happened to be back there at the time. When we found out the puppy got back there, it was absolutely mutilated and far too late to save it. We got Rusty back inside, and then went to notify out neighbors. Our neighbor was there for the puppy in it’s last breath, and that was the first time I had seen him in a state of true sadness and dread.
I don’t know what to do with Rusty, my grandmother wants to get rid of him now. I wanted some input on if their were any other options.
