Pretty sure my late middle age dog thinks he's a human 4 yo

We all know the attitude. Dog thinks he is people, therefore where the people go, he gets to go too.

My dog is a mutt of the variety that's so mixed up he has lots of instincts without any skill or talent. He smells, and I mean SMELLS, but cannot track (or even see his 'prey' right in front of him), etc.

He loses his tiny mind whenever there is a toddler around. Like, up on two feet, let's play, I am you and you are me sort of stuff. He is gentle with actual babies and defers to adults. He's socially awkward with other dogs, too. Has no idea how to interact but becomes visibly sad if other dogs ignore him.

I can't help but think he believes he is people, but his instincts tell him to engage with other dogs. His previous owners never took him around socialized dogs much, so all his bonding has been with humans. Either way, he's cute as heck, but I've never met a dog that so thoroughly believed he was not a dog. XD
